Enhancing student ability with debate
PORT ANTONIO - In March, the Women’s Centre of Jamaica Foundation (WCJF) Student Debate Competition took place at the Port Antonio Centre. This annual event is a flagship extra-curricular activity for the WCJF, as it help students practice and demonstrate their critical thinking skills, and communication skills.
The debates intend to deepen student understanding of topics, especially when listening to the opposing point of views.
This year the topic stuck to the theme of GBV – While students from Highgate Outreach Centre expressed why society should be blamed for the high level of violence against women and children, students from Port Antonio Centre debated against the notion.
The debate lasted approximately 2 hours. The winning group of the debate was Highgate Outreach, and one student from Highgate was given the ‘Best Speaker’ award.
In the end, it was clear the activity helped the students cultivate their persuasion skills, and it offered a sense of comradeship.
