Students take silver medal in JCDC competition

SAVANNA-LA-MAR - Eight (8) adolescent mother from the Savanna-La-Mar Centre entered the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) Performing Arts Competition, and received a silver medal during the Parish Finals, in February.

Their dance routine entitled, ‘Ma Africa’ embodied the story of a teen mother, and her triumph after she had given birth. The routine was choreographed by Henroy Whitton.

Performing arts is great medium for students to develop self-confidence and strength, and imparts the notion that greatness is what they create.

The adolescent mothers who competed had the courage to perform in front of a large audience of various high school students. They looked past all the criticisms and were determined to give a remarkable performance.

As the audience watched in silence when the WCJF adolescent mothers took stage, a student in the crowd said, “if I am not proud of any group here today, I am proud of this one (Women’s Centre). I have no connections but the fact that they are here. This is inspiration!”

This was the first time the WCJF has ever entered the JCDC Performing Arts competition, making this a memorable and great achievement!
