Kingston Centre holds IWD event, unite to end GBV

KINGSTON – The Women's Centre of Jamaica Foundation (WCJF) Kingston Centre held their own International Women's Day (IWD) event that featured motivational speeches, testimonies and entertainment by students and artists.

Greetings were made by the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport Permanent Secretary Mary Alison Mclean and the WCJF Board of Director Chairperson, Debby-Ann Brown Salmon.

The keynote speaker, Nadine Sutherland gave an educational, inspirational discussion to the girls, advising them to not give up and keep reaching for their goals. The room was silent after a heartfelt testimony was made by Sudan Haynes, a beneficiary of Eve for Life and a sexual assault victim. The event also featured a dance number by the students of the the Kingston Centre, and a perforamnce by vocalist, Cherine Anderson.

During the end of the event, martial arts expert, Marcia Wedderburn (Cherry Natural) demonstrated self-defense techniques to use if anyone encounters an attacker.

The event closed with final words from Gay Williams, the Kingston Centre Manager.
